COST OF A DRIVING LICENCE: The fee will depend on whether you want to:
- Get a first full licence or provisional GB licence.
- Replace a licence that got damaged, lost, stolen, or destroyed.
- Renew it altogether or change the name, address, or the photograph.
- Add, renew, or remove an entitlement.
- Exchange the driving licence (e.g. swap a paper licence to photocard).
- Get the licence back after it got revoked or ‘taken away’ (e.g. after a disqualification).
How to get the First Great Britain Driving Licence
- First provisional licence (e.g. car, moped, motorcycle): £34 online (£43 by post).
- First full driving licence (after passing the driving test): Free by post only (£17 to use a different photo to the one on the provisional).
- First full GB licence in exchange for a full European Community, European Economic Area or other designated foreign licence: £43 by post only.
Note: The cost of a driving licence is different in Northern Ireland.
Replace a Lost Driving Licence (damaged, stolen, or destroyed)
As a rule, the cost of replacing a driving licence is £20. Getting a replacement licence is a requirement if yours gets defaced, destroyed, lost, or stolen.
Change Name, Address or Photo on a Photocard Driving Licence
The fees for making changes to a driving licence depend on what you change and whether you do it online or by postal methods.
- Change of Address: Free (online or by post).
- Change of Name: Free (by post only).
- Change Photo: £14 online (£17 by post).
- Change Photo and Name (together): £17 (by post only).
- Change Photo and Address (together): £14 online (£17 by post).
How to Renew a Driving Licence
- The current cost is £14 (£17 by post) to renew an expired driving licence with DVLA.
- It is free to renew a driving licence from the age of 70 and over (online or by post).
Note: In most cases, a photocard licence is valid for 10 years (unless stated otherwise). DVLA send a reminder to renew the photo before the current licence will end. The cost to renew an expired drivers licence at a Post Office is £21.50.
There is no charge to renew a short-term medical driving licence. The renewal can take place online if you have certain health conditions. They include a heart condition, diabetes, epilepsy, a sleep condition, visual impairment, or Parkinson’s disease.
How to Add, Renew, or Remove an Entitlement
- Adding entitlement to full or provisional licence (e.g. to drive a bus or lorry): Free (by post only).
- Renew entitlement to drive a bus or lorry: Free (by post only).
- Giving up entitlement to drive bus or lorry: Free (by post only).
Note: If you want to change the photograph at the same time it will cost £17.
Exchanging a Paper or Non-GB Driving Licence
- Exchange paper licence for photocard with change of address: Free (online or by post).
- Exchange paper licence for photocard with change of name: Free (by post only).
- Exchange paper licence for photocard with no change of details: £20 (online or by post).
- Full Northern Ireland licence in exchange for a GB licence: Free (by post only).
- Full European Community, European Economic Area or other designated foreign licence, if a previous GB licence held: Free (by post only).
- Full European Community, European Economic Area or other designated foreign licence, if a previous GB licence not held: £43 (by post only).
How to get a Licence Back after it got Taken Away
The fee depends on why you had your licence taken away and how you got it back.
- Disqualified for any reason (except drink driving): £65 (by post only).
- Disqualified for drink driving and you need to pass a medical exam with a DVLA doctor: £90 (by post only).
- Disqualified for drink driving and you do not need to pass a medical exam: £65 (by post only).
- Licence returned after it got revoked under the New Drivers Act: £50 (by post only).
- Licence returned after it got revoked for not handing it over to DVLA or at court: Free (by post only).
