Getting started with How to Record Audio in Pro Tools

Pro Tools is a software that lets you produce, record, edit and mix audio performances within a “session”.

Once songs have been written, the next step is to get into the studio and actually record the performances from each one of the musicians or artists of a band.

Today, we are going to explore the required configurations and procedures that any Pro Tools user will need to follow in order to properly Record Audio in Pro Tools.

Create or open an existing Pro Tools session:

2. Create a new mono audio track and label it:

For the purpose of this tutorial we will create an audio track labeled as “Lead Vox”.

3. Switch to the Mix window:

4. Look at the I/O configurations of the audio track:
5. Set the Input to the proper hardware input of your interface:

For the purpose of this tutorial we will use “Input 2” on our interface.

6. Record-enable the track and set the proper recording levels:

This part is crucial when recording digital audio. We want to record-enable the track and start singing (or playing the instrument) at a comfortable level. At the same time you want to make sure that you adjust the preamp gain on your interface so that the peaks hit between -6 and -12 dBFS on the level meter.

Once the level has been properly set on the pre-amp we can start the recording procedure

7. Go back to the Edit window and engage the global record enable button:

8. Press Space Bar and the recording procedure will start, you can now record your performance:

9. Press the Space Bar again to STOP the recording:

We have now recorded our first “Lead Vox” performance.

10. Press play (or space bar) to start playback and listen to your recorded material:

You can stop the recording by pressing the Space Bar again.

11. If you have finished recording, toggle the record enable button of the track OFF:
